He also dove into mythological research. “I found myself reading piles of books with titles like The History of Japanese Folklore,” Gaiman explains. “I wanted to try to understand where these characters, many of which are really from Miyazaki’s imagination but are inspired by the essence of Japanese mythology, came from.”
